The Rise and Fall of Infectious Diseases
Thu Aug 04 2005

Recently there has been a resurgence of Pertussis (Whooping Cough) in teenagers. It seems the immunization received as young children has worn off to the point that the number of cases doubled from those reported in 2003 to those reported in 2004. The booster for this disease has now been added to those recommended/required (depending on your school district) for children from 11 to 18.

We found this out today at the doc appointment for #1, and he was not thrilled to hear it., he HATES needles. I finally bribed him that if he got through the shots (he also needed the Hepatitis A vaccine) I would give him the choice; he could get a new book or a blizzard from Dairy Queen. He chose a book and didn’t give the technician any problems when she gave him the shots.

I love it when that happens!

I haven’t told #2 and #3 yet that they need to go in and get this. They aren’t as difficult to handle when they need shots though. I will still give them the reward option to be fair, but I predict that it will be less of a difficulty getting them into the clinic for this.
