Pre-Mothers Day
Sat May 07 2005

Hubby took me out today to buy me the toy I'm playing on now. As a day-before-Mothers-Day spending spree, he bought me a new notebook to use for school and all other general geeking I want to do.

It's new... it's shiny... it's MINE!!!

Is it sad that Hubby and I consider a good date or good time spent together going out shopping for electronics? We aren't quite as bad as wanting to go party at Radio Shack, but admittedly we are pretty darn close.

We also spent the day working out in the yard as the weather chose to cooperate with us rather than follow what the weather report predicted.

Hubby & #1 worked on finishing the dog run

I transplanted 'maters and put them out in one of the sunniest parts of the yard

The raised beds got weeded and thoroughly admired

And I briefly considered putting the blueberry and honeysuckle into the ground before putting it off until tomorrow

I'm hoping the weather continues to cooperate tomorrow so we can enjoy the great outdoors. It would be nice to head out to the zoo or the local gardens.

Isn't it great to have a new home and a yard where you can do whatever you want to do? I love digging in the dirt and watching things grow. I had tomatoes like crazy one year--when I had a yard.

Well, I guess I didn't cover all the Kosher points. Fish must have fins and scales, so shark is not kosher. In fact any *predator* of *any ilk* is not kosher. Rabbits have feet, not hooves, so they're not kosher. Warm blooded animals must have split hooves and chew their cud. Deer is kosher, but it has to be slaughtered in the proper way. Shooting or bow & arrow aren't allowed. The animal must be slaughtered with a single cut to the neck arteries so that it dies instantly and painlessly.

Dolphin, by the way, is not a fish. It's a mammal, warm-blooded and gives birth to live young, but it neither has hooves nor chews its cud. So Mahi-mahi, delectable though it is, is not kosher.

As for the meat-milk thing, the Bible doesn't go into detail, but the Talmud further explicates the laws and goes into great detail. We accept that meat and dairy digest at different rates, and so we don't mix them. And that, regardless of any other explanation you might get, is really the basis for separating the two. The "Law" makes a statement, and the Rabbis find the reason for it.

    Shalom

About fertizer, I'd have to ask the rabbi. It's not a subject covered in any of my sources. It probably doesn't make any difference, or there'd be something somewhere about it.

About fowl, raptors are forbidden. We generally stick to domesticated fowl as it's much easier to avoid any possibility of mistake. Again, the fowl must be slaughtered humanely, same as other animals.

A really good book on all aspects of Jewish life is How to Run A Jewish Household, by Blu Greenberg. Available in paperback at bookstores.

    Shalom

Looks like you got alot done for Mother's day.
I bet it looks great when it blooms.

I hope you had a good Mother's day.
