Hitchhiker & other stuff

We went to see Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy today, and the kids now have a greater understanding of why I answer 42 to virtually everything. For the most part it stayed true to the book, but there is a huge section in the middle of the movie that has nothing to do with the book. I was ready for it though since I had read a sort-of "making of" story about it a while back. It consisted of older interviews with Douglas Adams (prior to his death obviously), which alluded to the parts in the movie being things he thought about later that he wished he had put in the book or something like that.

The kids LOVED it though, and it was almost more fun watching them than the movie.

When we left the movie it was absolutely pouring out. #1 announced that when we got home he was going to go take a bath so he could dry off. As we were all soaked to the bone from running from the theater to the van, we all agreed that it was probably a good idea.

As for the other stuff of this entry, it is mostly gardening related. I saw a show today saying that if you want to kill off weeds in an area of your yard, but also want to be able to grow something in that spot; the answer is a sunny day and white vinegar. Spray or pour white vinegar on the offending weeds on a sunny day, and this will kill the weeds virtually overnight. Wait about a week, thoroughly water the area, and in the next day or two plant whatever you want and it should grow like a charm. I think I’m going to try that this year. White vinegar is sure a heck of a lot more affordable than many of the weed killers that I don’t particularly want in my yard in the first place.

Of course… my yard will smell like pickles, but I can live with that!

I heard a rumor about the weather on the news tonight (I consider them rumors rather than forecasts) that it possibly won’t be raining on Sunday. I certainly hope so as I have a lot of things to get into the garden this weekend! It is my hope to get all my starts in as well as the seeds I still need to get started. With any luck I will also have the chance to go get a couple berry bushes to put in the yard also. I’m dying to have a few raspberry bushes in the yard, and the kids have put in a request for blueberries. I was considering kiwi, but that will have to wait until next year as I don’t know if I will have a place to put them. If the yard turns out this year to be like I think it will be, I will also be looking to put a couple fruit trees in the yard. An apple, and either peach, plum or pear should do the trick. I would like to have an apricot, but I don’t think I can successfully grow one in my area. I’m ok with that though. I can get the apricots I want from any one of several places in the area when it comes time for canning in a couple months.

I have had apple trees most of my life. My Dad has two peach trees. One is an early peach and the other a ? regular peach. He also has an Italian prune.. which is really a plum tree. Yummy plums too
and both peach trees produce lots of fruit.
I love apple trees cuz they get so huge and climbable as well as I love apples. Even rotten you can use them for juice or cider
Best wishes for a yard is coming together beautifully!
Harry Potter movie is on TV... Oh I must go
    and make dinner!!!!

I am not a fan of chemical warfare and would rather not have the stuff on the property. Vinegar is safe as well as cheap. Thanks for the tip. I think I'll give it a try. Rumor has it that the sun might even shine today. *fingers crossed* lol

Wow it sounds like everyone is getting rain. It's raining here today. Hope your able to get your garden going. I got a lot of my stuff out earlier this week. I was going to plant my seeds Friday but I ran out of time. Hopefully some time this week I can get that done.
