Can Anyone Explain This To Me?
Sat Apr 09 2005

Two different criminal cases, the first involving a teacher who molested a student. The second involving a man who sent e-mail spam to millions of internet users.

The teacher gets sentenced to 6 years in prison, the spammer gets sentenced to 9 years in prison.

Does this seem remotely just? Is sending spam really a greater crime than molesting a child?

I sometimes have to wonder at what some people consider fair and just punishment.

You know what? I seriously think you might be onto something with the Paying to Think idea. I am going to figure out how to make it work so that he doesn't just get $. I'm thinking he would have to write a short essay on the situation.
Hey, we haven't even talked about Survivor. (Maybe they need to do a Survivor parents vs child reality show?). I'm bummed about Olong, I'm routing for Step, that girl has heart.

Perhaps the longer sentence is only because the crime effected such a large number of people. And it could be that the judge in each case gave the minimum sentence in the one case and the maximum in the other....
