Mystery Solved
Sun Jul 11 2004

Thanks to the folks on one of my many e-mail lists, my mystery plant has been identified. It seems, what I have here, is Miner's Lettuce, or Claytonia perfoliata. It seems that it got its name from the California gold miners eating it as a source of vitamin C in the spring time. It can range in color from green to purple to brownish green/purple, and can be found from Alaska to Mexico, and South Dakota to California. There are some reports of it having been found in New Hampshire also.

I don't remember having seeds for this, and as it is technically classified as a weed, I suspect it flew in from out of town! Just to be sure it was tryly miners lettuce, I did the Campfire Girl test on it by putting a small bit between my lip and gums and held it there for a while to make sure nothing turned numb, burned or gave any other negative result, and when my mouth gave me the “all clear” after a while, I further sampled it.

Not bad. It may have to be picked, washed off and added to tonight’s salad!
