Blue Rose Developed
Wed Jun 30 2004

I came across this and thought it was cool enough to share. I find myself wondering if the injection of DNA from other plants will increase or reduce resistance against the various diseases roses are prone to. I'm also interested as to what color of flower seed propagation would result in, and question whether the DNA would remain true when propagating through cuttings as time passes.
Interestingly, I came across another article from May 7 on ABCNEWS.com, in which it looks like a similar technique was used utilizing an enzyme from the human liver, but so far it seems that trial has only resulted in blue spots on the rose bush.

I have to wonder what kind of Pandora’s Box this will open as far as genetics in humans. Will this open doors to people engineering their children reminiscent of the movie Gattaca? What kind of long term effects will it have genetically if cross pollinated with other strains of roses?

There are two sides to the argument of whether or not man should play God. I won’t get into that argument now, but I’m quite interested in seeing what the future is of the blue rose.
