It's All Yarngirl's Fault
Sun Mar 21 2004

Yea, that's it. I'll blame it all on Julie!

After having drooled over many of her Afghans and other projects she displays in her diary, I decided to once again try my hand at crocheting. I gave this a go many years ago when I came across a hook and yarn. The best I can say about what was created from those was that it didn’t fall apart until the first time it went through the laundry.

After finding an item on the web to crochet, I tooled on over to Michaels and got the yarn and size of hook I needed. The project? Dish Towels.

I now have 1 ½ sad floppy looking things that are roughly rectangular in shape, and will be perfect for using in the 5th wheel while camping!

Of course, now I’ve fixated on crocheting. I’m bent on doing as many as possible so my hands can become accustomed to working in concert with each other to create something other than websites and food. Any time the kids aren’t arguing or fighting, and I’m not doing chores or cooking, I find myself with hook and yarn in hand trying to get the hang of it.

The first two I started, went well until I set them down and went to go change laundry loads. Then the kids picked them up and “helped” me with them. After being unable to untie the knots they created, I cut that segment off and started over. Now I’ve started hiding it whenever I need to set it down.

The kids enjoy crocheting, and #1 has one or two scarves to his name. I can see now that if I want my projects to remain safe, I will need to keep a stash of yarn on hand for them to work with. Hopefully it will be something I can divert them to when I hear or see a storm brewing between them. It is a nice quiet activity that should keep them distracted long enough for them to forget about the original squabble.

    LOL!

If I have to take the blame for something, I'll take this one happily.

And you're right, keep making them and soon your sad floppy things won't be so sad. Trust me, I've had plenty of sad floppy things made around here.

Very cool that your boys want to do it too! I love that!

By the way.. new picture up, and another new one later tonight or tomorrow. Do you think I get ANYTHING done around here since that hook is permanently welded to my hand? I should have warned you how addictive it is, but I'll bet you could already guess that.

I love crocheting but the feel of the yarn and the plastic or aluminum hooks give me goose bumps. I need to find a wooden crochet hook. It is hard to describe the feel/sound, other than it drives me nuts and I must stop. My first scarf was a nightmare and I hid it in a box up in the attic. hehehe

So, is this why you haven't been around much at DD land? Glad to hear your creative side is taking over. Have fun and prosper!

I used to do a lot of crocheting. Kept my hands busy so I couldn't use them to poke food in my mouth.

Hmmm. Maybe I should get back to it.

Your idea of teaching your kids to crochet may be the solution to their squabbling. Pass it on to "Dear Heloise." Or maybe even Parents magazine.

The Carnation jingle made me laugh out loud.
