Taking advantage of the weather
Mon Jan 19 2004

While it is still soaked outside, we took advantage that the water was not coming from above. There was actually a beautiful shade of blue sky, and a strange bright yellow orb up there.

Weird.

We managed to get most of the sticks and branches from recent adverse weather picked up. I left all the small ones to use for incentive chores for the kids this week. They are a wonderful response for "Mom, can I play the PS2?"…"Sure honey, just go pick up all the little sticks under the tree in the front/side/back yard."

Mind you I don't make them pick ALL of the sticks under ALL the trees at once, just under one tree at a time. It takes them 10 to 20 minutes to do it (it would take myself or Hubby 5 minutes at the very most) and then they are ready for a bit of time playing the game.

This works wonderfully for pine cones also.

Pine Cones. I have always found that term funny. We are forested predominately by firs in this corner of the world. Mostly Douglas fir, but a small smattering of spruce, cedar and larger smatterings of countless other members of the fir family. We would rival New England in the autumn if it were not for all those conifers out there.

OK, back to why I find the term pine cones funny. As I said, we are surrounded primarily by fir trees. The cones of the fir tree are smaller and more flimsy than most pine tree cones. They look more like a dog turd deposited in the grass than they do of a pine cone, but I digress. Why are they referred to as pine cones? When I call them fir cones to anyone, I get strange looks and people question if I mean pine cones.

Yea, whatever.

Now, back to taking advantage of the weather. Concrete surfaces have been swept and/or hosed down. The garden and containers are mostly ready for planting. I just need to work some compost into them and we will be set. Part of the yard has been raked, and the compost pile added to and turned. Looking at the compost pile I noted that it probably wouldn't hurt to get some more worms to add to it, but that can wait a while. I will likely get them around the time I get my yearly supply of praying mantis for the garden. I absolutely HATE earwigs, and of course they are proliferous in my neck of the woods. I think they are like Tribbles and are born pregnant. In that aspect they are the same, all they ever do is eat and procreate.

Dumb bugs.

Watching Idol now. Thought the Unchained Melody guy was amazing.

Really liked the guy who impersonated the classic from long ago. The redhead in the stuffy suit who just barely got in.

Some of the gimics are a little insane. With the guy taking off his shirt and cheerleading... batons? Have these people seen the show? Give me a break.

I find myself cringing at things people say and do more than how they sing now?

Oh, I absolutly adorned the military girl. She was cute!

Hope you managed to convince your son that the monsters in the closet arn't real. ;)

I hadn't seen scooter girl when I made my last post.

My heart is with Scootergirl. She's cute and spunky and seems sweet as sugar. I hope to see a little bit more of her personality and who she is. But maybe that's the Real World fan in me. ;)

I definitly think she'll have to work hard and listen to EVERYONE to get to the final 12. It's gonna be really tough on her.

I think she'll float by mostly on her charm. She can sing, but she wasn't a knockout.

(in response to your comment...) Where I work is a restaurant that's only in Oklahoma City, Coit's. They used to have everyone clean everything out, but frankly minimum wage isn't enough any more for fast food workers and their managers to even care enough to clean places like they should. And I have enough friends in fast food to know that Coit's is more well off than places like Braums, McDonalds, Carl's Juniors, etc.

Now me, I always keep my area clean. Maybe I cut a corner here and there on sweeping, but everything in my area gets a thorough wipe down, considering I deal with drinks and touch food. Not everyone does that, though. You just really never know.

Wasn't American Idol great? And it's on again tonight and tomorrow night too!
I thought the military girl sounded okay and Simon was a bit too mean to her.
I say pine cones too. LOL, habit I guess.
I caught the obnoxious fiance show and Average Joe Millonaire also. I was in reality show heaven last night, beginning with a show on MTV.

That is so funny. We had the same occurrance here. I went outside and there was actually something blue in the sky and there was this strange orb in the sky shining down on me making me feel all warm in the cold air.
