All Is Quiet
Mon Sep 08 2003

Monday rolls around again, and after the insanity of getting the kids ready for school the house has settled into a peaceful quietness now that they are out the door. Of course now it's time to vacuum. I think I'll put that off for a while and enjoy the peace.

Hubby gets one day off this week. Normally he takes Friday, but he has a meeting that he needs to be at. We heard that on Thursday military members get into The Fair for free. We are so there. I'm already anticipating the buttery flavor of the scones and the wonderfully unhealthy burgers available at every corner that are a must-do for lunch! OK, now I'm hungry.

I've got some homework I need to do today. Not too much as I've been doing it steadily since Friday, but there are still some bits and pieces I need to attend. Of course, being the geek that I am, I've also decided it would be a good idea to re-write all my notes so far. I have been putting them into Word documents and playing with all the fun math and greek symbols in word to my hearts content. My kids think it is strange that I'm making graph's in Paint and pasting them into the document. Oh well.

Hubby leaves next weekend for a week and we are pushing to get all the errands and chores we have to do completed before then. My folks arrive in town the day before he gets back, and we would like to not have those tasks hanging over our heads while they are here visiting.

On the gardening front, my zucchini and squash continue to supply 4 third world countries with enough produce to feed their populations, and my tomato plants are so heavy with fruit that they are threatening to fall over any moment. My cucumbers are reluctantly producing and quite resentful of the squash next to them hogging all the sunlight, and the remaining carrots I have in the ground are ready to come out any time now. With the weather cooling down, I'm going to try to get in one last crop of lettuce, spinach, carrots and raddishes. The ones I had took extreme offence to the hot weather we've had over the last month and turned their roots up and died. My neighbor mentioned that she has had success with onions during mild winters here. I may put a seed or two in the ground and see if I get lucky with that.

I'm also going to see if I can convince Hubby to put in another raised bed on the side of the yard that gets the most sun. I have my tomato and pepper plants there now in containers, but it would be nice to not have the containers to try to mow around for next year. I would like to have a couple items to grow next year that I'm not able to now due to the amount of shade I get on the garden. I may also see how my next door neighbor feels about possibly growing corn between our two houses. We have about 12 feet separating our driveway and shed's that gets great sun all day long. Maybe we can put in a few rows of corn together next year. There are a couple different kinds I would like to try, so I have to narrow it down between Ruby Queen, Early & Often, Dwarf Blue, or Early Choice. Right now I'm leaning towards Dwarf Blue or Ruby Queen, just because it would be fun to have something that you can't find in the store or at the markets.

I have 7 months to decide, so we will see what other treasures I can find before then!
