I'm Embracing My Inner Geek
Thu Sep 04 2003

I don't know why I'm doing it now, I haven't done this with any of my previous math classes.

I've been compelled lately to re-create all my math assignments in word and play with them electronically. I don't know why I do this, but it satisfies my inner geek so I'm not questioning it.

Hubby and I have long considered and been proud of our geekiness. We find enjoyment in our time spent together in configuring hardware and software, as well as seeing what all kinds of things we can do with the computers on our home network. We've done just about everything imaginable to all the 'puters in our home.

Much to the chagrin of our kids though, we still will not put internet access on their computer. When they ask why we won't, we just point to #1 and remind them all of his tendency to go to various colorful places on the web. I'm sure every 13 year old boy would love to go to these sites! As his parents though, we would really prefer that he not go there. We are mean. Just ask him.

It is just one mothers opinion, and I am sure you could care less what I think, but if you want to look at the internet as forbidden for the boys think about this. The age they are at now is going to require more and more use of the internet in school, and for homework. At some point your going to have to trust them. Sure they may break that trust again, but they will never learn if they are not given real life oppurtunities. Looking at "girly sites" is a lot less of a problem then doing drugs, or breaking laws. It is just this generations version of the Playboy shoved under the mattress. It is natural to be courious about the opposite sex. If it becomes the big "FORBIDDEN" thing then it will seem even more attractive. If you take the attitude of " We rather you would respect women" but let them have the internet, I bet they will find many more sites they rather look at, like some of the on-line games teen boys love to play.
My kids both type over 85 words per minute due to all the time on the internet. Many of the games have chat within them. The speed they type while chatting is so fast I can't believe it. Most schools require students pass a typing or "Keyboarding" test by 8th grade. The more time for practice, the easier to pass the test.

Did you ever get a hold of someone at the school to talk about the IEP's?
