Trying To Go Swimming
Thu Jul 31 2003

We took the kids to the pool to go swimming. Actually, to jump off the diving boards repeatedly, then swim over to get out and do it all over again. We got all settled in and the kids on a good routine of the jump/swim kind, then the lifeguard blew the whistle and ordered everyone out of the pool.

OK, everyone reading this who has seen the movie Caddyshack, raise their hands.

It wasn't a Baby Ruth.

It was interesting to see their "sterilization process". Basically, the offending item is fished out with a net (quite a process to watch if the turd is on the bottom of the pool) and thrown away. Large quantities of granular chlorine or other types of Pool Sanitizer is thrown in to every part of the pool reachable by lifeguards standing along the edge throwing it. The filtration system is then turned on "High" and run for an hour (keeping everyone out of the pool during this time of course). After that the pool is "Inspected" to see if it is sanitary enough for people to go back in.

We watched this with mild interest (OK, the kids watched it, I continued to read Dune and soak up the sun). When the all clear was given dozens of kids around the pool gleefully jumped in to resume their interrupted activities.

After 45 minutes, when a second turd was found I decided it was time to go home.

Ah well, the kids had fun and burned off some excess energy (and I was able to further work on my tan). That's all that matters!

Ewww! You actually let the kids go back in the water after an hour? I would have marched everyone home right away! Even with the chlorine and stuff... imagine... diluted poo in one's ears, nostrils, mouth.
    Ick, ick, ick!
    Everybody, out of the pool!

Yuck...at least they can see poo, no telling how much pee is floating around. Unfortunately, while our river is gorgeous, who knows what comes from upstream? At least they have chemicals to clean the pool with.
It has cooled down to the low 80's instead of high 90's. The Portland area was pretty bad for a few days.

Was that at Augustus Brown? LOL, BTDT. I am intimately familiar with Juneau, having spent the majority of my life there. Don't recognize you or anyone in your diary though, isn't that sad? When I went back this summer I barely recognized anyone. <sigh>

oh dear, that is pretty horrid
thank goodness nothing of the sort has ever happened in the years i've spent swimming at the local pools. i believe though, if somebody does that in the pool then they have to drain the entire thing. kindof puts you off wanting to visit the same pools again eh
