August 8.
What you ask, is the holiday that occurs on August 8? Why it is Sneak A Zucchini Onto Your Neighbor's Porch night! If you don't wish to be caught observing this holiday, be sure to leave zucchini on your own porch to avoid suspicion.
In preparation for this holiday, we are refrigerating each day's harvest of zucchini and yellow squash (it doesn't have it's own holiday, so I'm going to include it so it doesn't feel left out). I have rented two additional refrigerators to enable me to do this.
For anyone not familiar with growing zucchini, it is perhaps the easiest and most proliferate vegetable to grow in just about any garden. If every nation planted zucchini, it would end world hunger. I'm almost not kidding. One zucchini plant is enough to feed the city of Philadelphia for the duration of the summer. I have 4 plants of zucchini, and 4 of yellow squash. I'm not sure if 3 refrigerators will be enough to contain all the fruit we take off of said bushes between now and the 8th. I should however, have enough to put 2 pieces of fruit on every doorstep for a 10 mile radius.
As in previous years, I'm not restricting myself to porches. Cars with open windows, and convertibles are fair game also.
I'm thinking of having a few friends over to join in the fun. They can bring the beer, I'll supply the zuke's and we will be set!
