Day Trip

For the 4th yesterday, Hubby and I decided to embrace our roots. We both grew up in the same town, and the 4th of July activities were very much part of our summers as members of the same Drum Corps. See this entry of Oscar's to see how we spent some of our time growing up.

Yesterday we took the 2 hour drive down to our hometown to immerse ourselves in the past. Not much has changed about the celebration at Ft. Vancouver. There are some added security measures that have gone into effect after 9/11, but otherwise it is pretty much the same. We found ourselves among about 100,000 complete strangers, enjoying the food, activities and fireworks. We ran into old friends, made some new ones and had a blast. I always am aprehensive about the traffic and crowds before these kind of things, but once I'm there I don't mind hiking in a mile or two to avoid parking nightmares, and the crowd becomes part of the experience.

Today of course is a different story. We are all bone tired from driving home in the middle of the night. We got home around 2 or so, and I don't think anyone was up before 8 this morning. For my kids that is a feat unto itself. #3 is very much an early riser, but it seems today he managed to sleep longer than usual.

Today I took a tour through my garden. I definitely need to give the spinach and lettuce some attention, thin out the carrots a bit more and DEFINITELY need to go get a praying mantis or two next week! I admired my bell peppers which, of which one or two should be ready to pick in the next few days. My Zucchini and squash also have a day or two left to get a tad larger.

I love having a garden! I just wish the melon, cukes & pumpkin had done better. The area of the yard that was designated to be my garden just does not get enough sun for their taste. I will need to put them in containers on the other side of the yard next year. They should do better over there.
