Hurry up & wait...
Sun Apr 27 2003

Well, everything that can be planted at this time, has been. I now get to spend time waiting to see future veggies spring up out of the earth. I do still need to wait for my 'maters & peppers to be to the point where I can transplant them from their little pots into something they can go crazy in. I'm considering doing these in containers instead of the garden. While my garden gets a good amount of sun, there are parts of the yard that get more, and would be more ideal growing locations for these. If I can find lemon cuke seeds, I may put those in a container with a trellis also. For my regular cukes, I'm going to rig something up to get them up off the ground once they are big enough to do so.

I do still need to prepare the areas I will be having the pumpkins & watermelon in. I would like to get the watermelon in soon, and the pumpkins in around Mothers Day or so. I'm toying with the idea of taking over a bit more of the yard area we don't really use and getting some more types of melons to put in. The idea of freshly picked honeydew to tantalize the tastebuds is quite tempting. If we are here still next year (which is the plan barring any unforseen circumstances) I may look to put in raspberries, strawberries and I have a perfect corner for currants. I bet I could even fit a couple small (vigorous pruning every fall & spring to keep them reasonable sizes) apple, cherry and plum trees along the back fence. Maybe find a good place to put a container with kiwi! I do so love having a kitchen garden!

I've been reading about growing some veggies I've never been exposed to before (besides the eggplant). The Jerusalem Artichoke sounds like something I would like to try. I would also like to grow some of the kole family, I just need to find a way to prepare it that my family will eat. While corn is something I've aways wanted to grow, I just don't have the space for it. There is a large space between a few houses here, maybe I can convince my neighbors to have neighborhood corn patch. Potatoes, peas, asparagus and broccoli are also some I would like to grow. Boy do I wish I had more space to play with!

I am thinking of sneaking in some herbs by putting them in with the flowers. There are variations of basil that are quite ornamental, and some of the other herbs work well as a border.

Ah, enough with garden dreams. Back to studying for my math test.
