Is the death penalty too good for some criminals?
Mon Oct 28 2002

I've been thinking about the sniper incidents in Washington DC, and the people arrested so far in relation to those crimes.

I admit that I am in strong support of the death penalty for certain crimes. I also believe that the executions of some of the more severe cases should be publically televised. While I know it won't deter all the criminals, I believe that the publicity of those executions may deter enough to make an impact on the crime rates in our society.

While I believe the legal system in the US is good, I also believe that parts of it are broken. I believe that there are far too many frivolous lawsuits currently clogging up the system. I believe that a majority of medically related lawsuits should never have been filed. I can't speak for anyone else, but whenever I have undergone an invasive procedure, I've had to sign paperwork acknowledging that there are risks and possibilities that something may go wrong. I was always made aware by the doctors and nurses that while the intent of the procedure is to fix something that is wrong, but things happen that noone can foretell. Knowing this, should something happen, I believe that there are no grounds for a lawsuit should something untoward actually happen.

The legal system here tries to provide people with the proceedings happening within a reasonable amount of time. Unfortunately there are so many needless and ridiculous lawsuits out there, that it seems nothing is done in a timely manner.

Ok, off this soapbox and on with my day.

Ahhhhhhhh, I'm much too cruel to support the death penalty.
I'd much rather see them in jail for life.
    All of it.
A not so nice jail (aren't they all?) full of not so nice people.
And I'm quite happy to pay for it all.
    My treat.

I agree there are allot of lawsuit happy people out there. I totally disagree with ANY idea of televison broadcast of executions. The type of warped minds that mass murder, want to be famous. They do it to be infamous. The knowlege they may get high prime time ratings may actually incurage the sick minded to act upon their impulse to kill.
I also hate to think of Americans acting like some stoneage Aribic country giving public stoneing a stage. We are better than that. It is called humanity, dignity, and respect. Just think of how many children would see such an execution. Parents don't monitor what their children watch. Seeing real murder live on their tv would be damaging. No deturant will stop the truly sick mind anyway. Why make the rest of us suffer?
