Morning Muses

Everyone survived the first day of school yesterday. #2 came home with a few items not on the supply list so we ran out to Target to pick them up. Some of these items were clothes for gym.

Can anyone explain to me why all gym teachers in the world require part of the PE uniform to be the most difficult article of clothing to find on the face of the earth...a PLAIN white T-shirt? Would there really be any harm in a white t-shirt with a non-offensive logo on it?

While I can find undershirts galore that are plain white, they are all made from this very thin almost transparent white cotton that would not keep anyone or anything warm on a cold winter morning. At least #2 has an advantage I never had, he has been given the option to wear shorts or sweat pants.

I admit, the only real memories I have of gym in school were of freezing for an hour, 7 out of 10 months of the school year. I don't remember any gym I ever had in any of the schools I went to having heat of any kind. While I am sure the locker rooms probably were heated, they sure did not seem like it!

I suspect that may be a tactic of schools to be sure the kids are awake. I can envision the teachers planning for the kids who always seem sleepy to have gym first thing in the day, just to give them a freezing wake up call. For the finishing touch they turn off the heated water and have the kids shower in an ice encased shower room.

Ah, the wonderful days of school #2 has before him.

PE is a scam to make the kids realize how good they have it at their desks for the remainder of the day.

By state law they can not require that he take a shower. All the kids here skip that due to sexual harrasment concerns. Another trick, for clothes. Buy the zip off cargo kakis. Long pants for the day, shorts for gym. Screw them on the t-shirt. Even if they deduct his grade a point each day for not dressing down correctly, they can't flunk him if he still participates. Also my attitude has always been.... I don't care what grade they get in gym. Gym won't get them a job.

Well, yes, perhaps but who makes the judgement about what is harmless or not?
Do you realise how lucky you are though?
How many kids on this earth do not know what a gym is?
    Take care

That might be a little harsh, ADM. I'm sure that Ali and the rest of us appreciate that there is gym time available for children in the US. But it isn't out of line or ungrateful to desire a little sanity in the governing of how gym is conducted. Why, for example, couldn't a plain T-shirt of *any* color be used in lieu of a white T-shirt? Or why not permit athletic logos such as the Nike check mark or Adidas logo or some other sports affiliated thing, especially since that is what the stores are selling now-a-days?
