Going to a Garage Sale is a contact sport

Going to Garage Sales in Juneau is something to experience. The people up here take this very seriously.

Garage Sales are held on Saturdays, typically from 8:00 until noonish. During this time, all sane residents of Juneau/Douglas stay home, or at least off the road. Also during this time, all typical rules of the road seem to go out the window. Residents drive at breakneck speeds from one sale to the next, often paying no attention to the driving laws. If you see a car driving down the road with the door open and the driver having one leg out of the car ready to sprint away from it, you can bet that he/she is on the way to a Garage Sale.

Once you arrive at a Garage Sale, if you have not previously donned protective gear such as helmets and shoulder pads you run the risk of injury. Buyers are more aggressive than the bears on the shores of salmon swollen streams. Elbows jab left and right, fingers poke at other peoples eyes who appear to be interested in the same item the finger owner is interested, the scent of pepper spray hangs over the area like a miasma.

On the bright side, the Garage Sales up here are great. Books, clothes, toys, tools, transportation (motorized and non-motorized) even homes! You can find just about anything you are looking for. If you have problems locating a spring handled fizzlebuster, come on up! You are bound to find three, and such a price!

After today's ventures, my parents are now the proud owners of a life-sized stuffed Asian Elephant, and it only cost 25 cents! I'm not sure how they are going to get it here to the house, or what they will do with it once it is here, but by golly they own it!
