We took a tour up the Tracy Arm. My photos are currently being held captive by my digital camera, so I will borrow someone else's photos to display where I went. Once I'm home and can transfer the pics to my own computer they will be put on display for all to see!
One beautiful aspect of SE Alaska are the fijords. The spectacular rock walls stretching above you on both sides, the ice bergs, the wildlife (we only saw seals and birds today, but that's ok!) and just being in the presence of the ancient glaciers is a very humbling experience.
If you have never gotten up close and personal with a glacier, picture this:
You are in a GIANT bowl of rice crispies with the biggest ice cube in the world. Unlike a glass of water, this ice cube does not make small snapping sounds. It makes giant CRRRRRAAAAAAAAACCCCCCCKKKKKKKing sounds that rival cannon fire. These echo down the rock walls for miles. As a glacier calves (where big chunks fall off), after the splash you have several minutes of the rice crispies noises as the ice in the water crashes against each other as the wave impacts them.
Oh, not to self, if I ever go on one of these trips again, DON'T FORGET THE SUNSCREEN!!!!! (Hunkka-hunkka Hubby and I both have quite the sunburned faces!)
