Allimom And The Case of the Appearing Snail
Mon May 06 2002

We have a small 10 gallon fish tank which we keep stocked with fish who die on a fairly regular basis. I am sure my brother would scold me for not changing the water often enough. I actually think it is more a matter of over crowding as we (try to) do water changes on an almost weekly basis.

We have a Plecostomus to keep the green furry stuff from overwhelming the tank. We have a Catfish to get what falls to the bottom. We have a handful of various Tetras to entertain us for minutes at a time. In the tank I have 4 different live plants (I always seem to kill the plastic ones...). I have purchased all these live things and nothing else.

Where the heck did this snail come from?

The next case will be the case of the Appearing Trout after one of the kids put the fish they catch into the tank....

Remember those live plants you bought? That's where the snails came from. Botia's and Clown Loaches will eat the snails, but you have to keep them ALIVE first.....

We used to put trout in the tank with our goldfish. And yabbies. My goldfish killed the yabby and terrorised the trout til it had anziety attacks and hid behind the filter. The goldfish eventually ate both the yabby and the other goldfish in the tank, pieces at a time... it was quite gross!!

Oscar beat me to it ... the snail hitchhiked in on the plants. Some young snails are so small you really need a dissecting microscope to see them - a friend of mine got a summer job identifying species of snails and spend three months looking at freshly hatched snails under a microscope, so I know this from first hand experience.

    Have you named the snail?

I quit buying live plants for my aquarium due to snails taking over.
Sorry to hear about having to find a new home for the dog...but you are absolutely doing the right thing.
HeeHee, you just left me a comment while I am leaving you a comment, talk about timing!

I have a mystery snail also. We don't even have real plants, all plastic. I can't figure it out. It is a long thin type snail and hids most of the time. Once in a while it appears on the glass where we can see it. No idea where it came from. Odd.
