One solution....

.....to school discipline I have come up with, School Jail in lieu of suspensions.

Kids don't like to be different from other kids (despite saying that they want to be individuals). Conformity seems to be one of the most important things to a kid. Who knows what cataclysmic horrors would befall them should they stand out from their peers (In my mind I see a room full of kids in blue jeans and sweatshirts or t-shirts, but one child with plaid pants and a paisley shirt).

School Jail. An space in a common area that is obviously set aside, bars would be good, that the offenders would carry out their punishment time in. Even better, a plexiglass cage. Something that would easily allow other kids to stare in horror at them. No speaking would be allowed unless they receive verbal permission from the adult in charge. They would have to ask permission for everything, firstly raising their hand in order to be given permission to speak the question. Any violation of any of the rules would result in additional time spent in the cage.

During their incarceration, they should be required to do their normal school work, in addition to writing letters of apology to any and all persons involved in the action that put them their. That or a 10,000 word report on social behavior and the ramifications to those that do not adhere to society's rules. Somewhere in this report they should be required to accurately use the word "antidisestablishmentarianism" in an exemplary manner regarding the negative aspects of their behavior.

The schools should have bright orange jump suits in a wide variety of sizes. The kids in the "jail" should have to wear them. These should be thought of as a modern "dunce cap". They should be as ugly as possible. In no way, shape or form should they be flattering (even if the person wearing it otherwise looks like a supermodel). Hmm, instead of orange it should perhaps be the aforementioned plaid and paisley combination comprised, of course, of the most hideous color combination possible.

Of course, with this method of punishment for my children, my house would not get as clean as it does now. I think I can live with that though.
