Of Broody Hens and Yogurt
Tue Jul 14 2015

DearDiary.net will store this entry in its compost-bin for around a week (just long enough to start smelling!) after which time it cannot be recovered.

If, before that time, you wish to recover the entry, please send a request to [email protected] and if its not too smelly, we'll fish it out for you.

Please provide your username and the entry title (or date)

Just so you can be sure, the entry is listed below;

Around the middle of June, another one of my hens went broody. We let her sit on the eggs she had under her when we moved her to the "Nursery" (a portable-ish contained small coop). She had 11 eggs under her. When the first egg hatched, she stopped sitting on the eggs, and as a result none of the rest hatched. I had some hopes, we were having very warm weather, and the eggs were layed over 10 days. I thought at least one more would crack, but not so much.
So now I have former Miss Broody happily clucking away at her little chick (which based on his appearance is a boy). Sadly, I don't need another rooster, so if I can't find anyone local to me who wants a rooster, he will be going into the freezer once he is big enough. In the meantime I'm having a wonderful time watching the little clucker.

In other ventures...

I made yogurt for the first time with my Yogourmet (http://www.amazon.com/Yogourmet-104-Electric-Yogurt-Maker/dp/B000N25AGO) last week. After snacking for a few days on it, I decided it was too runny for my taste. I wrapped it up the cloth bag that came with the Yogourmet to drain off some of the whey, then got busy with other things. Instead of draining it off for a few hours, it drained overnight. So, I gave the whey to the dogs (who thought they had won the lottery and were in Doggy Disneyland), and sampled the very thick and creamy yogurt after stirring in a spoonful of my homemade Marion Berry jam.

Oh. My. God.

I will never buy yogurt for myself again.

Now I just need to convince the rest of the family to try it. They have been turning up their noses at it.

That might be due to a disastrous yogurt attempt I tried a couple years ago on my stove top. But this...? Wow. It is almost as thick as cream cheese, and AMAZING.

The best part? It is ridiculously easy to make. I now know what I'm getting my Daughter-in-Law for Christmas! And maybe some other folks!
