Tayberry Success & Other Stuff
Sat May 10 2008

#2 works with his volunteer group at our local Farmers market on Saturdays (#1 did this for the past three years, now #2 is having a go at it). I drop him off at the farm around 6:30 Saturday mornings, and he is there until about 2.

I got there early to pick him up today, so #3 and I browsed through the booths looking for tomato plants while we waited for him to be done. I noticed a gentleman there who had berry canes, so I headed his direction hoping for something different, but expecting the usual raspberries, boysenberries and various strains of other common blackberries. My jaw just about hit the ground when I saw that he had one Tayberry left for sale. I jumped towards it so quickly I think #3 thought I was having a heart attack.

After chatting with the gentleman for a bit I left his booth with #3 toting the Tayberry vine I bought for myself as an early Mothers Day present. I am not exaggerating when I say that I am now as happy as a pig in mud and am sitting such that I can gaze adoringly at my new purchase as it sits on my patio while I figure out where in the yard I’m going to put it.

I’m easily pleased, and this has definitely pleased me.

I did do some work out in the back yard cleaning up the bed along the fence some. I started to smell rain so I had #3 help me pack up quickly so we could get things put away before the skies opened up on us. While we put things away we noticed that a couple Rufous Hummingbirds have finally found our feeders. We enjoyed watching them zip between our yard and the neighbor’s yards while we cleaned up. It wasn’t until we had everything put away that I noticed that our neighbor has their sprinkler on, which was what I had smelled, not impending rain.

Oh well, it was time for a break anyway! I’ll continue enjoying watching the Hummingbirds while I listen to Runrig sing Loch Lomond.

I had hummingbirds where I lived before, but there's nothing here to attract hummers. Only planting is green stuff.

I got buzz-bombed by a hummer once. That was an experience!!

You find a good spot for that tayberry, now, y'hear!

    Bless

I'm so glad you got your tayberry since I know you've realllly been wanting one ;). I'd like to plant some berries myself. I tried at the other place but the soil there was so acid defecient it was pathetic. I dug down the requisite four feet and tried every enrichment known to man and my berries never did squat *sigh*. I don't seem to have the acid problem here but I also don't have a whole lot of sunny space left unless I plant on the property next to the neighbors garage and methinks, as invasive as berries are, they might not appreciate that, lol.

    Good luck!
