Crock Pot Situation
Tue Aug 08 2006

I've had two neighbors come by so far telling me "Something smells good!" and asking why I've got my crock pot out on my front porch.

I'm cooking sauerkraut, kielbasa and cabbage in it, and the kids were complaining about the smell, so I moved it out there where there is an outlet next to the milk box, which I have the crock pot sitting on top of.

Yes, I know sauerkraut is cabbage. The recipe called for shredded cabbage on the bottom, the sausage on top of that and the sauerkraut dumped over the top of everything and to cook it on low for 8 hours.

It should be ready about the time Hubby gets home, so I'll bring it in then. I can predict that #3 will turn his nose up at it, but I'm hoping #1 and #2 give it a try. Hubby will love it as he loves sauerkraut and usually only gets it when we go to Costco for hot dogs.

At some point every winter, I simply MUST have some sauerkraut and kosher sausage or hot dogs. I usually put some potatoes in with mine too. You are making my mouth water.

    Peasant food.

    YUM!

Ahem. After 3+ years of working at the student union behind the snack bar, smelling the stuff simmering in the crock pot all day, and then having to clean the blasted thing, my answer is .... blech! You can have it! ;-)

My grandmother made the best sauerkraut in the world. I'd like to have some right now.

Gotta love sausage and sauerkraut! But, like you, I have kids that would turn up their noses! My daughter would probably be willing to try the sauerkraut (she is a big fan of pickles, and that's kind of in the same category), but my son would HATE the smell. So, I really LIKE your idea of moving the crockpot OUTSIDE, because I think he actually might be willing to try it if there were "no strong odors" in the house at the time to incite his gag reflex...

    KIDS. AARRGGHH!

Oh, I wouldn't sympathize too much. The snack bar at the union included the fresh made ice cream from the school's dairy farm. Yum! There's advantages to going to "Silo Tech". :)

I graduated and am getting ready to move to take my first position and I am so excited that I'm actually going to have kitchen counter space!!! I can't wait to do some cooking with lots of room and a place for stuff. My crockpot has been in the cupboard for the last 3 years, don't think I used it once during seminary - no counter to put it on. I'm looking forward to making a pot roast or soup or something in it.

Yum... now I'm getting hungry just thinking about your kielbasa and the things I could cook.

And your post on tomatoes. I love to make spaghetti sauce from scratch (well almost scratch I would use canned tomato sauce and/or paste along with some fresh tomatoes), can't wait to do that either.

Hope your tomato-fest goes well. :)
