Teenage Stress
Fri Jun 17 2005

Hubby left on the 7th, and it has been … interesting around here since then. The end of school is coming up, and it is serious crunch time for the twins if they want to get their grades up. #2 in particular seems to be feeling the stress more so than #1 (who I secretly think just doesn’t care at this point).

#2 has been staying after school and working his butt off trying to get his grades up to passing. This has resulted in more stress than usual, and in the past 10 days I have seen more emotional outbursts from him than usual. They range from storms of crying to frustrated outbursts of violent threats towards whichever of his brothers is getting on his nerves at the time.

Last night it came to a head and #2 sat in my arms crying for about an hour straight. He cried, he laughed, he cried some more and we talked a lot. As a result, I’m letting him sleep in as long as possible today and I will be taking him to school late. I think he needs it. Before taking him to school though, I think we will make a trip to the Y so he can get some exercise and work some of the stress out of his system. I know this works for me, hopefully he will feel the same type of stress relief I do after a work out.

I can remember going through similar emotional outbursts when I was a teenager, particularly at the end of term crunch time and other stressful times of the year. Hopefully the break he will be getting today will be enough to get him through to the end of school next week. I can only hope!

Ahh, grade crunch time. I had just school crunch time, trying to raise my GPA back, and I just ended up lowering it, because by Spring break, I was so burned out, I couldn't hardly function. I didn't really care anymore, and it didn't seem to matter how much I tried, it just got worse. This summer couldn't have come at a better time, because I needed the break. And, while working 35 hours a week doesn't seem like a break, I don't have to worry about homework deadlines, when this paper has to be done, or finals. I just get up and take it one day at a time (which was recommended to me during the school year, but it's hard to take it one day at a time with 10 paper deadlines looming in your immediate future).

Don't you feel smug when you plan something for the kids, and they've already thought of it?

For certain, there's going to be a lot more cooperation and a lot less stress with your program. Happy summer!

I signed the letter and added my own outraged comments.

I so much love the relationship you have with your boys. It is so wonderful that at his age he can snuggle with you and cry, laugh and just talk. do you now how rare that is??
teenagers are so touchy.. 'come here.. go away'.. all in one breath..

I applaud you! honestly and full heartedly..
you are doing so very much right!!!

also working out is good for those emotional outbursts and feelings of dispair..it gets those endorphins going..

Best luck to the boys for finals and all.. they will make it..
my GS was so overwhelmed this term he totally failed.. And has summer school all summer now..
HE had so hopped to save money from full-time work for a car.. But.. you know, consequences are on him now.. he is forced to learn of his error..
    :/
    hope hubby hurries home.
    Hugs

When I was little, MeadowGold Milk company made milk deliveries in our area. Sometimes, we would even get chocolate milk too. You are right, the milk tasted fresher and it was always a treat when the driver let us check out the truck. I am not sure when that stopped and I know I haven't seen something like that in 30yrs. I didn't know that this still happened. It was always more expensive but the quality is so much better! Thanks for bringing back a great memory.

    Have a nice weekend!
