Playing In The Dirt
Fri May 06 2005

I had to make a run to the store today for milk (among other things) and while there I just had to pick up a couple plants as an early Mom’s Day present to myself. As they are veggies the whole family will be eating, I guess they really aren’t only for me, but I can live with that.

I ended up with a couple artichokes, a small rosemary bush, a cucumber (to replace some of the seedlings I transplanted that didn’t make it), and a pear tomato (just about the only variety I did not start by seed myself). I then came home, waited for the twins to get home and we went to work in the yard. The twins mowed the grass and helped me get those plants into the ground. Then I transplanted a several Johnny-jump-ups, a couple of my clematis from their containers into the ground, as well as some foxglove and some creeping phlox. I’m hoping the weather will hold out this weekend a little bit so we can get the blueberry, #2’s rose, the honeysuckle, 2 trees and clematis or two into the ground.

I also bought a couple containers of night crawlers and had the kids disperse them about the yard.

The containers I’m emptying out will then be re-filled with soil and the tomatoes and peppers I’ve got started will go into them. I think I will talk with Hubby about putting in a third raised bed next year so we don’t have to have the containers about the yard. I know they drive him nuts as it gives the yard a more cluttered look than he likes.

I’ve got several other things that still need to go into the ground, but I’ve got a tree to move before we tackle many of those. They will be going in the place that will be vacated by the tree, and obviously it will be easier to plant them after the tree is gone.

My yard is starting to take the shape I have in my mind. If the weather would cooperate for a good solid week, I could probably get everything done! I know that is too much to ask for Spring weather though…
