The New School
Fri Feb 11 2005

I've been looking through the calendar for the boy’s new school, and there was something about it that was different, but I couldn’t put my finger on it. Finally I realized what it was. There are no half days of school for the entire year.

However… (Oh come on you know me by now, there’s always a “but” or a “however”) every Wednesday for the entire year the schools let out an hour early. Three are extensive after school activities offered on Wednesdays, and that day is used for meetings (staff or with parents), or “in-service” tasks and activities that normally occur on half days.

Early Wednesdays is recognized by all the schools in the district. The after school activities are district wide and encompass any activity that kids may or may not be interested in. Also offered on Wednesday, at least at the boy’s school, is a homework club. Anyone who either just wants to do their homework at school at that time, or who needs help with something meets in the cafeteria and they work on homework (although I noticed a LOT of flirting also going on).

All in all, everything the boys and I have seen since Tuesday has left us with warm fuzzies about this school and the district. I’m hoping we all stay enamored after the move. Keep your fingers crossed for us!

I remember study hall. Though mine was always manned by a particularly stern teacher and we pretty much kept on task. If we started talking, he would come and sit down near us and read his book or something. Dang!

Sounds like that school has some of its ducks in a row!

That's how it is here too. On wednesday's they have a short day, but they have a study period or 8th period and also inschool instruction or whatever after that. So they can either leave at 1 PM or stay until after 3.. depending on what they need.
I think my GS is going to volunteer to be a student aid in Math. He'll be able to work off some of his Lates. and get credit for it towards fees and stuff
I hope he follows through, he sure isn't trying to get a part-time job.

I hope the new school works out well. Sometimes just that ability to start over in a place where you don't have a "history" makes all the difference in the world. I hope that proves to be the case for your boys.

Woohoo to your hubby coming home....and just in time for Valentine's Day. Now that is quite the gift. :)

I'm happy that your hubby is going to be home with you soon. I'm glad my hubby doesn't have a job where he has to be away from me for any length of time except going to work every day.
