The Olympics & other stuff
Sun Aug 15 2004

We've been watching the Olympics on and off since the Equestrian events this morning. The boys didn’t show much interest in this, or the soccer. Later in the day, when the swimming events aired, their tone changed. #2 summed it up well by stating Girls in tights, it doesn’t get any better than this! Personally I feel the same way about the men for the swimming, diving and gymnastics events.

Other than the Olympics and my calculus homework, I kept myself busy with plums today. The kids helped me make plum butter, and right now my house smells divine! I was going to do blackberries also, and #1 went out on a mission (of his own choice, I’m not questioning it) to get enough blackberries to at least make a few pints of cobbler/pie filling. After picking about a pint he got tired of fighting the stickers (he was wearing shorts, a tank and sandals) and came home. I’m hoping to take all the kids out picking in the next day or so. I’ve been trying to get out for a couple weeks now, but something always comes up to sidetrack me.

#1 has oral surgery this week. I’m not really looking forward to it. There will be needles involved, and getting him to hold still for anything involving a needle takes an act of God. I need to find big bribery items to dangle in front of him to see if I can entice him to not have a violent reaction to the needle, and more particularly to the person wielding the needle.

The past few nights have been late for the whole family with us watching the different events. Based on the kid’s behavior today, it needs to come to a stop tomorrow. The behavior they have the next day after a late night is just not worth letting them stay up to watch the events. I also need to keep all of the TV’s off tomorrow and kick the kids out of the house. We all need a break from each other, and I think maybe a trip up to the pool for #1 & #2 will aid in that as well as help them get out enough energy during the day that they can get to sleep more easily at night.

The most important thing is to find a way to reduce the Drama Queen level #3 has been pulling lately. Hubby spoil’s him rotten, and then leaves me to put up with it when he leaves. It has got to stop. Either that or I need to leave and Hubby needs to stay here and coddle him. He is 10 years old, and does not need to be carried every where. I’m sick of it. I tried making not-so-subtle hints to Hubby last Christmas when he carried #3 all over Disneyland and California Disney. He didn’t take, or chose to ignore the hints. I think maybe I need to find a hint that resembles a brick wall for when he comes back.

Brice is the same way about needles. Two years ago he had to have cavities filled and it was quite the scene.
Blackberries...I should check mine. I haven't seen the horses trying to eat them yet.
Sorry about your car, how frustrating!!!!!!

Alli, I don't know how you do it! I didn't go back to school until my kids were pretty much self-sufficient. In fact, one of them had already flown the nest, and the second one was about to.

Ever hear the story about the farmer who trained Missouri mules? If you have, take heed. If you haven't I'll tell it to you via email.

    Shalom

A useful tool for berry picking is a coffee can with a strap attached so you can dangle the can around you neck leaving your hands free. Matthew made his own using heavy cotton string. It is not as comfortable on the neck, but it works.
