Phase Five

Maybe six. I don’t think I documented one session out there by the puddle.

Today I installed the …. puddle holder.

I obtained said holder at Tractor Supply yesterday. Made a special trip. I needed to get that thing in the ground.

Now you might be thinking…and rightly so… umm ‘scuse me Cupcake, why didn’t you put that thing under the faucet? Well, I have it in my mind to find some kind of tile, or pipe for the water to run into the tub. A water chute of some kind. There won’t be an outlet for the water, so it will be more of a drip situation I think. I thought I would plant water loving plants around it like mint. I’ll have to do some research.

I DO need to do research too, because I obviously know nothing about what deer will or won’t eat. I put a new Heather plant out there in the pot right by the rocks yesterday thinking there was no way they would be interested in that prickly thing. Turns out they love it and ate most of it. I brought it up to the front porch, watered it and put it behind the protective fence I have in front of the plant stand.

It wouldn’t be nice if I told you what I said when I saw my ravaged Heather plant. And it’s not exactly attractive to share what I would like to DO to the deer right now either.

I would not be exaggerating to say that on any given day, about twenty to twenty five deer roam all over my yard. Since Elvin went to doggy heaven, they have REALLY made themselves at home. He used to chase them often and keep them at a more respectful distance.

I am seriously thinking of getting a bb gun to discourage them. Just to keep them out of my immediate surroundings. After all, people have territories too. They have the entire hillside that connects to the wilderness area. It’s not like there’s a lack of space for them.

Anyway I’m doing a lot of reading about what plants are less likely to be munched on by deer to plant around my rocks and puddle.

I will be on the lookout for some more flat rocks to put around the edges. And I want my sons to know that I do have some good construction practices. I actually used a level …. 🙂

Cool eh?

This may be all that I can do for now, except searching for more flat rocks. I’m not eager to plant anything yet. It’s only February after all. But I’ll be making lists! And looking at bb guns. 🙂

I just got sad all over again. 🙁

  4. Looking forward to seeing how it all turns out!

I have had several little ponds over the years but I usually give up on them after a couple of years, the dogs and grandkids muck about in them too much. Can’t wait to see it finished!

Mint????? I beg you to reconsider. Mint has nefarious plans to take over the world, and then use Earth as a jumping point to take over the rest of the solar system and, eventually, the galaxy. Mint cannot be purged by any known toxic substance (this I know personally, for I have attempted to Agent Orange my own mint, which only laughs in my face and continues its rampage across garden and lawn). Think of mint as bamboo that attracts stinging insects and you’ll have a good idea of what the malicious vegetation can accomplish. If you can’t cage mint in a pot, it truly will revolt and turn your yard into Mintovia.

    • Yes. You are right, it is a tenacious bit of herbage, no question. However in our climate, it is kept under control because I control the water. In the summer, we can go for an honest 4 or sometimes 5 months with no rain. This is not ideal for mint. So it doesn’t get to fulfill it’s desire for world domination. And besides. The deer don’t eat it. This is its most golden quality in my circumstances! 🙂

      • There’s definitely something in Salamander’s theory if the deer won’t even eat it. I’ve a suspicion that deer eat just about anything. Apparently except mint. Which means that it’s definitely intent on world and martian domination and has found a way to stop the most hardened enemy (the deer) of thwarting it’s plans…

I do rather like how you had a small spirit level in the bottom just to be sure though…
