It’s a Start

The weather, it seems, wanted to make a point this morning, and for about 30 minutes it snowed hard and fast. Enough to cover the ground with a respectable layer, turning everything white.

The point being I surmise, that it was in charge, even if February HAS arrived and the days are getting longer and the grass is starting to grow.

But just a few hours later, the sun came out and it all melted. This encouraged me to put some of my garden plans into action. I have decided to start early this year and work in small segments.

I told Mr. P. that I would be responsible for a compost pile that he started last fall. He has others that he maintains and since this was already close to my garden, I thought it would be a good thing for me to work on since it’s not a really big pile right now:

But it’s not in the place I want to have it, so I started a new spot.

I will put up more fencing around it to hold in the material and it will have air on all sides. And yes, that’s carpeting in my garden. Think of it as high end mulch. 🙂

Then I dug sod away from these two huge rocks that are near the garden and the driveway. They are really cool rocks, but basically the get ignored most of the time. In the summer, the grass grows up and partially obscures them. I decided I was going to plant flowers or herbs around them this year. I dug out the sod, and later on, I will fill in the trench with potting soil and figure out what to grow there that the deer won’t bother. That’s always the trick around here.

I’ll have to do some research…… again.

Deer. It’s a longstanding low level skirmish between us.

Anyway, it feels really good to be outdoors doing some physical labor. Though we could easily get another snowstorm or two before winter is over. I’ll keep plugging away at my plan, even though there is nothing on paper and I completely change my mind on the fly. I’ll let it evolve ‘organically’ as they say.
