um… 我想… 不同的人對此問題有不同的答案… 而我是buy Weber那套的!在他的認知裡，人之所以為人是因為我們是懂得meaning-giving 的動物。陳海文:”it implies that without meaning the human species cannot survive for its lack of orientation vis-a-vis the world.”
-Here the focus is no longer on the rules of sociological method defining the subject matter of sociology (a la Durkheim), but rather on the meaning of sociology for its partictioners per se.
-As a science of society the strive of sociology for objectivity is not symptomatic of an uncritical acceptance of scientific canon, nor of a questionable faith in the possibility of science of morality as the ground of scientific morality.
-Instead it is a manifestation of the will and courage on the part of sociologists and students of sociology to clarify the social situation under which they succumb to their own demons and conduct their own lives.
-…what is demand of sociologists and students of sociology is the recognition that all value conflicts are ultimately irresolvalble and value position.
-Sociology, though could not constitute a theodicy and redemption in its own right, is a science that could help us to understand our courses of social action, and thereby may help to prepare ourselves ot sociological vocation… “Know thyself” and… “Dare to Know”.
-…its teaching is predominantly negative, that we must learn to live with uncertainty and tension in a disenchanted world… One may get lost in the course of approaching sociology, and no promise of gain could be indeed offered.
-Sociology as a voaction is then essentially personal: it must always be rationally pursued, albeit with moral and religious fervor as a matter of life and death, as in the case of Weber himself.
希望大家能有will and courage 去面對uncertainty and tension in a disenchanted world 啦! Soci 眾弟子共勉之!!
