We opened the blinds to see a drift of snow piled in front of the kitchen door. We had to squeeze our way out and shovel snow away to let the dogs out to the loo and us to the log pile. I could tell at a glance there would be no laying in bed today. As soon as breakfast was done and hot coffee in our tummies we went armed with the shovel and brush into a white morning.
First of all we had to make a path to the wood pile and then get the snow from in front of the kitchen door. The path to the barn needed to be dug and the car was covered completely but as we were not going to be using it we had enough on our plate without worrying about that today.
The snow plough had been up the road again at 5am and pushed all the snow to the entrance of the drive and the drive is knee deep. When we decide to go out we will have to make that a priority. It took us about two to three hours to clear the paths properly. As the snow is piled up quite high on both sides of the paths due to previous snow clearing it took some energy to throw it over the piled up snow to a space behind. My forearms are aching with the unexpected exercise.
Our sick cat went out a little unsteadily to find a place to do his business and so we think he must be a little better at least although he is far from his usual self. I had to go and pick him up and bring him back to the house as the deep snow was just too much for him to manage.
Molly and Teal were restless as the snow in the garden is too deep for them to run in so I took them up to the field. The snow plough had been up and cut a road up to an isolated house at the edge of the field and they ran up and down the tracks it had left. We couldn’t do our usual walk as the snow was thigh deep and Molly may leap like a Gazelle but Teal and I don’t so we gave it a miss.
I gave the house what could be termed as a ‘Lick and a promise’ and prepared our lunch when it was all done. We wanted to go for a walk around the village and see what the rest of it looked like. Very little has been moving around and the snow is deep both on the road and verges. As we were walking down the road to the shop I slipped and landed on my bum. The only thing bruised is my dignity thank goodness.
The Mayor and one of our neighbours were in the shop and both greeted us very pleasantly but the only other person we saw was the simple soul who I see wandering around a lot. He wears a big jacket but only little rubber shoes with plastic bags inside them. I feel so sad when I see him and hope that he has a fire in his house and someone to look after him. I must ask my friend Svtslana when I see her tomorrow. As we passed the bus shelter we noticed there was a bird trapped inside as the door was closed. I went in and tried to get it out but it kept flying into the windows so we left the door open for it. I suppose though it would have been better off in there out of the cold but there was no food and water for it. They usually light the stove in the bus shelter (it is a large room) but it wasn’t lit today so I wasn’t worried about leaving the door ajar.
I had a lovely shower to warm myself when we arrived back home. It hasn’t snowed again and tomorrow the forecast was saying it would be overcast. I can live with overcast. My husband has just brought in all the logs because I am in my PJs and we have fed the stoves to create a bit more warmth for sitting chilling with the TV tonight. I don’t think this will be on DD tonight though as the internet is slow to stopping and I am placing some photo’s on the page so that will make it give up for sure. I will have to do it in the morning if I am not successful.
Tomorrow I must go and visit my friend and see her before she goes back to VT. We also need to get more logs down near to the kitchen and I pray that there is no more snow tonight.
Goodnight all.
