ALOHA....come on in, the natives are friendly.

10 Jan 2004 - Saturday, January 10th

The beautiful weather here continues, after a sorta cloudy day yesterday. I love these cool nights and I have been sleeping much better than normal. The paper said that big waves are headed this way. They are supposed to be 30' today, maybe 40' on Monday, and again some big ones next Thursday. I would love to go to the Northshore and get some shots. I hate the thought of fighting the traffic, finding a place to park, and having to deal with Duke as I take pictures....but maybe. Duke continues his mending process but it is getting harder and harder keeping him restrained. When he is able to continue his normal routine I will be as happy as he will be.

Lately, some things have been really bothering me so I am going to rant a little.

- Politics: They say that politics has always been nasty. I agree to some extent but in the fifty years that I have been aware of politics, I have never seen it as nasty as it is now. It seems that politicians think that they can tell any lie, trash their opponents, cheat and steal, flip flop on the issues and not be held to account for themselves and their actions. I wrote the following letter to the editor yesterday:

"Dear Editor,

Again I became upset after reading one of your editorials. Today, and rightfully so, you championed the recent raid on mom-and-pop stores that have been selling drug paraphernalia. What upset me was the fact that you are again jumping on the bandwagon after the fact. Where have you been this past few years? Another upsetting aspect to your editorial was the fact, that at the end, you pandered to the local pot heads making it seem that marijuana (hemp) use is acceptable, and that Attorney General Ashcroft's enforcement of the laws of the United States is somehow wrong.

Yesterday you addressed "third world" mentality. Is it any wonder that the State of Hawaii equates to a third world country when your newspaper's editorial positions actually encourage it with your support of unions, politicians and practices that support that mentality."

The worst part of all this nasty politics is that we....the people are so accepting of all this, and of the political process as it is today.

- People: It seems to me that people are getting more and more self-centered, greedy, and rude. It is definately reflected in today's children. People seem to think that they are owed a living. I was raised to believe that "mine is not the reason why" and that to have a good life that I must live a good life, work hard, and care about my neighbor. That does not seem to be the case today. There seems to be so little respect today for other's feelings or property. Crime, both violent and property, is on the rise and I believe that much of it is caused by a general lack of respect for others and a feeling that only OUR wants, cares, and enjoyment matters. People now days laugh, or even snear at you, if you stand for ethics, morality, hard work, and being independent.

- The news media: I have always been one who likes to know what is happening in the world, and in my community. I mean important things....not what B.S.'s latest stupid stunt was, or what Mark Geragos (sp?) said, or to watch for hours some car chase in LA. People today seem to have too much need for entertainment and therefore that is the sphere that the news media has adopted. It is so hard to get real news, and educated, unbiased opinion on the hard news in this day and age. Where will it ever stop? When will people stand up and say enough? Until we who care do that, it will not get any better.

Probably no one cares except Onceburned and me.....but Yeah....Joe Gibbs is back!!!
