1 Dec 2003 - Gertrude Ederle
|
I don't have any idea how many people remember Gertrude Ederle, probably not many unless you are my age or older. Back in the period 1920 - 1960 swimming the English Channel was quite a popular undertaking by strong male swimmers. It was thought, back then, that women could not swim the English Channel. In 1926 Ms Ederle, at 20 years of age, swam the Channel in a record 14 hours and 30 minutes. Throughout the swim she was accompanied by two tug boats filled with family, friends, reporters and photographers who sang endlessly "Let me call you sweetheart." That record stood for 24 years until it was broken by Florence Chadwick who negotiated the Channel in 13 hours and 20 minutes. Gertrude Ederle, at age 98, died yesterday `in Wyckoff, New Jersey.X X X X X X X X
