ALOHA....come on in, the natives are friendly.
21 Nov 2003 - Stapelia gigantea

Four or Five years ago I purchased an unusual cactus at a plant sale. The woman who sold it to me told me that it produced a giant flower (6 - 9 inches in diameter) and that when it was in bloom that I should move it away from the house as the odor of the flower was not pleasant, and that it attracted flys. What she told me was true, the bloom was huge in comparison to the plant and it smelled like rotten meat. I did some research on this plant and found that it comes from South Africa and it is often called the carrion (dead meat) flower. After a few blooms over the next couple of years it produced a seed pod, which I had never seen produced by cactus plants. I planted two of the seeds in small pots last year and watched both of them sprout and grow. A week or so ago I noticed that a bud was forming on one of them. Here is a picture of it, just a day or so from opening. I will show a picture of the star like flower when it finally opens.
Here is more proof that, even in winter, we still have flowers blooming.
I even have some self-seeded petunias sprouting in a pot hanging on my front lanai. XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXI was going to rant a little about Michael Jackson today but I am sure that everyone has seen, and heard, more than they want to hear about him and the case. Twenty-four hour coverage of him....lying in wait for him to show up at one of several different locations is the height of rediculousness.
