6 May 2008 - Yesterday's DD

Twice I tried to send out an entry, and twice my screen blacked out before I could click The Button.  The third time, DD was going crazy. I couldn't read any diaries (...cannot display this page messages), and when I finally clicked on the third  attempt, DD just simply ate the entry and disappeared.  So I'm going to try one.more.time.  Here it is.

This is the third time I'm trying to enter this. My puter keeps blacking out on me.

Anyway. . .

I like to think I'm smarter than the A.ver.age Bear, and I think Missy has made it her life's work to prove that I'm not as smart as I think I am. Yup, she got out again this evening.

She was way off there in the living room when I opened the front door to retrieve my indoor slippers that I'd left parked on the patio. All of a sudden a beige and dark brown flash went out the door, over the barrier and away she goes!

All my cajoling and threats were for naught [Wouldn't you think I'd learn? Never worked the other times she got out], so I corralled the other cats and sequestered them behind closed doors, all the while being called all kinds of names in the catly lexicon. I left the door open a bit so Missy could come back in when she wanted back in.

So what have I learned from this? That Missy is an escape artist and she'll bide her time. Which is to say: Nothing.

6 May 2008 - Crossword puzzles

I hate to admit it, but I've met my match.

I've been doing crossword puzzles since I was a teenager, so I've had a lot of experience. I do the New York Times daily and the big Sunday puzzles in ink. My sister says I'm bragging. Actually, pencil doesn't show up too well on newsprint.

As I said, I've met my match. I give up. No, I will not give up. I'll keep trying! When I go to my.att.net, the home page shows a directory for a multitude of activities beyond e-mail, and I'm easily sidetracked. So instead of checking my e-mail, I go looking for games. I thought I'd have fun with the daily crosswords, but they have me buffaloed. I hate to admit it, but they're beyond my capability to solve. I can fill in maybe 3-5 definitions, and that's it.

Maybe I'll just click on the "solve the puzzle" and see if I can get the flavor of the puzzles. They're probably British in origin, and Brit word puzzles always do me in.

There's also a daily jigsaw puzzle with easy, moderate, hard choices of solving. I discovered the only difference is the size of the pieces, so I go with the easy, which is big pieces. Much easier to see what I'm doing. Anyway, I do the jigsaws instead of the crosswords.

Sudoku is entirely beyond me. If I can fill one square, I'm happy. I'm usually good at word games, but not number games.

Anyone for Scrabble?

6 May 2008 - Today, the day after Cinco de Mayo

I had so much to do today.  Yesterday was pretty much a flame-out as far as energy was concerned. I didn't really wake up until about 1700 hrs. This has happened before, and I'm wondering if my diurnal habit is changing from morning to evening.

Anyway, since I didn't get much of anything done yesterday, it got to the point of Just Do It! today.  Needed cat food; needed to make a run to the post office; but most of all I needed to get rid of a load of newspapers for recycling.

I went to Shalom School to make a contribution to their recycling bin just before Passover.  The bin was so full, I could not have gotten another piece of paper in, not even by squeezing!  Then I was informed by the gatekeeper that the fence would be closed and locked all during Passover Week.  So I'm running around with a car trunkful of newspapers.  In the meantime, I've acquired another several bags full of newspapers, as well as a bag full of cardboard and a bag full of shredded paper, enough to fill the back seat of my car.  It was necessary to dump all that today. Not tomorrow. Today!  Whew! Tossing all that paper into a dumpster taller than my head wore me out. And I still had my other errands to run.

I went to the branch post office near me, and the line was out the door. I think I saw three clerks behind the counter, but I'm not sure.  One of the ladies standing in line told me about another branch up the street a ways that is never busy. She gave me the general location, and I wandered around a parking lot until I found a gentleman who could tell me where the post office is located.  I will definitely patronize that post office from now on.  There were two clerks on duty, and I was the only patron.   Fantastic!!  And it's on the same street, separated by a block, from Trader Joe's, so I can get two stones with one bird if I plan my errands right.

Now I have a goodly supply of cat litter (from yesterday's shopping at Costco), plenty of cat food from today's foray to PetCo.  I still need to go to the grocery store and buy some kosher items that I managed to forget about when I went to that selfsame store to pick up a prescription at the in-store pharmacy.  I've been having trouble keeping more than one thought in my mind at one time.

Last night I went into the bedroom to take my nighty-night pills and got distracted THREE times! The fourth time I went with one thought and one thought only: Pills!  OH! I need to go take my nighty-night pills for tonight. Now!!  Mission accomplished.

Now, I'm going to click The Button, then check my e-mail, and then do my daily jigsaw puzzle.  And go to bed eventually.

Bless
