16 Aug 2001 - We have light

|
I have had another few weeks of reasonable progress, starting with the wiring loom. It is in place and I have started to connect and test some of the wires. The Headlamps are in and working, the dash is in and the backlights work along with the ignition and main beam telltale lights. I have not been able to test the indicators as I have no flasher unit yet, but I have noticed a potential problem with them in that the loom lays down the drivers’ side in the Austin and the passenger side in the Escort, which is OK for reaching the starter motor and alternator but the indicators will be round the wrong way. I guess I’ll swap them at the switch. I have also started preparing the engines. I have dismantled the old 950cc engine down to the timing chain (need to borrow a big spanner for that one) and I have dismantled the 1000cc engine down to the flywheel. Getting the flywheel off of a Mini engine is not easy… I have not succeeded yet but I will soon, I have a very bent, homemade flywheel puller (I need to make a bigger one). Once I have these engines apart I will dry fit the old crank etc. to the new engine to make sure all is OK then it’s a case of taking the bearings to the shop, getting replacements and starting the rebuild. I have already bought the gasket sets so I hope that I am right in thinking that the crank will be a straight swap otherwise I have wasted 20 quid.
