So I just heard tonight that Mike, a former friend whom I no longer speak to, went home to Cleveland to attend his brother's wedding and did something which got his entire family pissed at him. Now, Mike's family all know he is gay, and although his sister has always been cool with it, the rest of the family, well, not so much. And they knew, from past experience, that he would try to bring another man with him to the wedding, so when they sent out the wedding invitations, they omitted the words "and Guest" from his, stipulating very specifically that he was only to attend alone and not to bring anyone.
Which he did. But during the ceremony -- which was held at a very conservative evangelical church, mind you -- when the customary question was asked as to whether anyone knew of any reason why the wedding should not be allowed to take place, Mike stood up and, in front of the entire congregation, declared the wedding to be invalid... indeed, he said, no wedding should be considered valid until everyone -- meaning gays, of course -- enjoyed equal marriage rights in this country.
With that, he walked out of the church, and during the remainder of the ceremony, stood outside the church in the pouring rain, holding a sign -- and picketed the wedding!
So everyone in the family was pissed at him for ruining the ceremony -- including his sister, who'd always been the supportive one.
Well, I thought it was interesting. Oh, to have been a fly on the wall that day!
