Today I had Tom Yum, a very tangy hot-and-sour Thai soup made, in this case, with chicken, mushrooms, tomatoes, and galanga root. Served with pot stickers as a starter to what was my main dish, Red Curry with Chicken. All for $5.95 plus tax and tip.I tried a restaurant today called Thai Avenue, on Broadway right off the Argyle strip in Uptown. It was the first time I'd been there. The food was pretty decent and I guess I'd go back. It certainly was worth the two-mile hike in the cold, windy subfreezing weather, having to dodge patches of ice here and there on the sidewalk from yesterday's storm. At least the sun was out today.
I've been in something of a rut with my dining out lately, going to the same old places all the time, so I've set myself a goal of trying at least two new restaurants each week -- places I've never been to before.
So today it was Thai Avenue. Last Saturday I tried Wing Hoe, a Chinese place that's been around since long before I moved to Chicago and which I've been wondering about forever. I didn't much care for the Kung Pao I ordered there -- there were almost no vegetables in it and the chicken tasted too smoky; at least the spicy black hot peppers helped disguise the smoky taste when I chewed on them -- and at $11.25 I thought it was rather expensive. Oh well, they did bring me a small dish of ice cream at the end of the meal, along with the fortune cookie.
This weather is a shock to the system. And it's supposed to snow again tomorrow and yet again a couple days after that. I hope we don't have another long, cold, wet winter like last year.
