18 Dec 2008 - Snow in the desert
My husband and I hoping to move to Las Vegas someday. One of the big reasons is to get away from the snow and cold. Apparently we'll have to put up with a little bit of the white stuff.
"Snow piled up around the famous “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas” sign on the south end of the Strip, as visitors parked and posed for pictures wearing hooded jackets. In other parts of the Las Vegas valley, snowfall toppled trees, blanketed rooftops and delighted residents who rarely get to see winter weather."

Blakkwolfe says:Arguing the case that global warming is a fabrication is much like believing the world is flat.
Democritic says: I live in Vegas and it does not snow "fairly regularly". We get snow in the Spring Mountain ranges to our west, but it is rare to see snow in the valley, much less accumulation. Plus we saw 3 inches twice in 3 days. Previously, we have seen snow 3 times in the last 9 years. If it snowed fairly regularly, we would have snow removal equipment at our airport, and for our roads. We have neither. Vegas is not tropical, we are a desert. So to have enough moisture in the air to create snow is rare. I think this is another example of the global "weirdness" that global warming creates.

Court Declines To Remove Blagojevich The Illinois Supreme Court yesterday declined a request to find embattled Gov. Rod Blagojevich unfit for office. CNN's The Situation Room reported that "without any comment, the state Supreme Court simply refuses to hear it, and the state attorney general says she's disappointed." WFLD-TV Chicago noted Attorney General Lisa Madigan's "motion sought to have Blagojevich declared unfit to serve as governor because of his legal troubles."
The AP reports "the court's decision renewed calls from Republicans for a special election to choose Obama's successor in the Senate.

Alaska probes racist e-mail jokes
ANCHORAGE — Alaska officials are investigating racist jokes about President-elect Obama that have been circulating on state government e-mail accounts.
One of the five e-mails obtained by The Associated Press asks what was the outcome of the Democrat's victory after all the time and money spent, and concludes: "Another black family living in government housing!"
State officials were unaware of the e-mails until asked about them by the AP.
Three of the racist messages were confirmed by the state's information-technology division after an electronic search of the government's e-mail system.
It appears the original e-mails were sent to state employees from outside the state system, but some state employees forwarded them.
One e-mail, with the subject line of "Night Befo Crizzmus," was forwarded dozens of times, Kreitzer said.

Bush Defends Anti-Terror Policies
To scant national media attention, President Bush defended his security policies yesterday in a speech at the US Army War College in Carlisle, PA. The AP reports that Bush, "ever focused on his legacy, said Wednesday 'there can be no debate' about his record of preventing another terrorist attack." UPI notes that "when outlining the strategy his administration pursued to keep the United States safe, Bush noted the results achieved and the institutions in place for future presidents 'to carry on this struggle.'" AFP quotes Bush saying, "We'll leave behind a vastly upgraded network of homeland defenses." The Hill runs a similar report.
(In a separate interview Condelezza Rice also stood by the decisions and said time will prove her right.)

Donor List for Bill Clinton’s Foundation Is Released
The governments of Saudi Arabia and Norway, the Dubai Foundation and the business moguls Bill Gates, Stephen Bing, Haim Saban and Robert L. Johnson are among the biggest financial backers of former President Bill Clinton’s foundation over the last decade, according to a complete donor list published for the first time Thursday morning.

Chrysler halts manufacturing as clock ticks on gov't bailout
NEW YORK (AFP) — Ailing US automaker Chrysler on Wednesday said it would temporarily halt manufacturing as demand plunges and the clock ticks down on a hoped-for bailout from the federal government.
Chrysler, the smallest of the Detroit Big Three automakers, and General Motors, the biggest, say they are on verge of imminent collapse unless the government throws them a financial lifeline.
Chrysler said it was halting its manufacturing for at least a month, beginning Friday, in response to a credit crisis and ongoing debate on a government rescue for the sector.

Rwandan Former Colonel Gets Life in Prison for 1994 Genocide
Former Rwandan army Colonel Theoneste Bagosora was sentenced today to life in prison for his role in the 1994 genocide in which 800,000 people were massacred in the Central African nation.

Divorce payouts - The big numbers
The primo marital payout was, according to “Access,” the $168 million check that ended the marriage of NBA icon Michael Jordan and his wife of 18 years, Juanita. Air Jordan manned up last year and Just Paid It.
Then there’s Neil Diamond, who crooned a Song Sung Blue when he got rid of his wife of 27 years, Marcia Murphey, for $150 million. Mrs. D walked away with $5.5 million for every year they were together. Not too shabby.
Back in 1989, uberdirector Steven Spielberg thought he had an airtight prenup with his first wife, actress Amy Irving, but he didn’t. Irving, the mother of his son Max, challenged the legal doc and ended up with $100 million after only four years of marriage.
Coming in at No. 4 is Harrison Ford, who shed his bride of 21 years, Melissa Mathison, back in 2004 for $85 million and, according to Forbes, a cut of his future earnings for the movies made during their marriage.

Latest From Late Night Comedians
Jay Leno: "That Iraqi journalist who threw his shoes at President Bush the other day said he planned his attack for months. Planned it for months? ... I mean, take off one shoe, you throw it. 'Oh!' you throw the other shoe," but he had to plan this "for months. And he still missed both times!"

Jay Leno: "Anyway, the guy is being called a hero in the Arab world. So, he has this plan and it's a failure and he's a hero. You know, if that's the standard, Bush should be the biggest hero in the Arab world."

David Letterman: "Everybody looks forward to 'Time' magazine naming their 'person of the year.' And today, they named Barack Obama person of the year. ... That's right. Finally, things are starting to go his way."

Conan O'Brien: "Speaking of the President, in a recent interview, President Bush said that he has a collection of over 250 autographed baseballs. Yeah. Unfortunately, the question the interviewer asked was: Do you have an exit strategy for Iraq?"

Conan O'Brien: "The Illinois Supreme Court refused to hear a motion to throw" Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich "out of office. Yeah. Afterwards, Blagojevich thanked the Supreme Court and said, 'Your check is in the mail.'"
