We spent the weekend camping out in our backyard. Even though it rained we had a fairly nice time. Since it was too wet out to take the tent down on monday morning, we still have it up and have spent free time inside reading and still camping at night. It is a nice getaway. We may leave it up all week. It is such a break from our regular routine. Nice cool nights. June has sped by way too fast, as usual. WE did a lot of planting. Kitty's mini-garden has already been raided. Some plants are entirely gone and other's are missing some leaves. I think it is a groundhog. Kitty thinks it is a beaver. ???
I did a lot of planting also. I planted lilies along a section of my lane. Orange lilies that are in bloom now. They are wildflowers. I divided them in late spring and had 3 containers full to set out. I am glad I finally got them all in the ground. Next year they should really make a show blooming out along the woods going. Actually, I planted them in 3 different sections overlooking the holler road. I am hopeful someday my work will pay off by giving me a beautiful summertime display. Not this year though.
We also picked cherries. Kitty really enjoyed picking and eating! We tried our hand at canning them and they look really pretty. First time ever canning cherries and it is very hard work! They should taste pretty good this winter when the snow is flying, though.
We also observed a mother cardinal. During a tree pruning episode, we discovered a nest filled with 3 brownish white eggs. We researched online and found out they were cardinal eggs. This proved to be true when we witnessed the mother sitting on the nest. Then not much later, the nest was filled with 3 hungry birds. We were not able to check on them for the latter part of last week. Yesterday, we checked and the nest was empty. They had matured enough to fly away! Was kinda a let down to find the nest empty but "such is life". And it is inspiring to know the tree provided shelter to three new red birds and now the sky is just a bit brighter.
Our trip to the library program was filled with lots of educational tidbits, mainly numerous plastic totes filled with snakes and other reptiles of varying sizes and shapes. ......I had hoped it would help my intense fear of snakes. Not to be, though. Some actually held the boa. It was approx. 5 feet long. I could not bring myself to even touch it. The kids I had along with me seemed to enjoy it and I am thinking it helps broaden their world. I could not sleep that night though. The lady showing the snakes said she feeds the snakes live pigs. I believe that is inhumane as the pigs do not have a fighting chance. I stayed up working on the computer basically the entire night , not being able to get the thought of that trapped pig out of my mind. There were other reptiles that the children were allowed to handle, iguanas, smaller snakes, a baby crocodile, etc. I guess it was basically a good day if not for the "pig" story.
Soon it will be July. The fields are full of blooming chicory, daisies, pinkish budding milkweeds, numerous tall grasses of many colors, purple tints of budding thistles... Summer is such a special feeling to be embraced. Just the smell of the hot sun baking the grasses during a nice long walk adds relaxation to my day that I wish I could bottle and enjoy during the long winter months. How such a bottle would ease my winter doldrums!
With the recent heavy rains, much damage has been experienced by many. Basements flooded, trees toppled, flooded creeks. Special thoughts and prayers for all those experiencing the down side of rain. Here along this dusty holler road , now turned muddy and messy, the rain falling on the tent roof was a much needed refreshment after many days full of wilting dryness. At times it fell too heavy but all in all it was a beautiful experience. I have read the day is to be experienced fully in the here and now and to be appreciated for any and all the small blessings that fill each its moments. I strive to live in the here and now. A hard job for such a dreamer!
Since becoming the proud owners of our little keychain digital we have spent the spring and summer documenting flowers, fauna, and wildlife, and now, we have submitted a picture of our cat, Santanna, to a website to receive votes. If any of my readers are interested in seeing one of our cats, please go to
Santanna and hopefully place a vote. Santanna is a very nice pet and adds a lot of charm to our home. If you do take the time to go and place a vote, an extra special thank you.
I do hope it does not rain anymore for awhile, our grass needs mowing, our weeds need pulling, plants still to plant, seeds still to sow, and i just get too lazy listening to rain on the roof top.
Thanks for stopping by and visiting this early morn. I hope your day is filled with many special blessings. Enjoy!
