2 Jul 2005 - Concert
I got the date for my piano exam. It’ll be in late August. We plan a few days away a week later; hopefully in celebration rather than consolation.

We’ve had a bunch of late nights in a row, because Mr Kimi has had to work some strange hours. And this morning he unexpectedly had to go out of town, which meant getting away at 6:30. He got back by lunch time, and we snatched a nap in the early afternoon.

We went to a concert this afternoon. This particular series of three concerts is at 4 p.m., and it works really well for us. It finishes in time to go out to dinner or to eat at home without rushing at all. It’s aimed at (and succeeds in hitting, judging by the audience) a much older demographic than we’re part of, though it does also attract some people with (very well-behaved) children.

The concert was good. It started with the world premiere of a New Zealand piece that was okay, though I’m afraid it didn’t really speak to me. Then came Mozart’s piano concerto in C minor, with locally-based soloist Tamas Vesmas. This was wonderful. Lovely music (of course), beautifully played. Quite inspiring.

After the interval came Beethoven’s Coriolan Overture, a piece that was new to me. It’s quite deliberately edgy and unsettling, and was an impressive piece.

The last section was Mendelssohn’s “Italian” Symphony. This was just lovely. It’s fairly familiar music, especially the first movement, but loses nothing for that.

It was decidedly chilly when we got out, and I was glad we didn’t need to be out late. We got home in time for a leisurely dinner that I’d bought from the deli that morning: vietnamese fish cakes for entrée, spiced chicken stuffed with veges for main, and chocolate tart for dessert. All yummy. Then we curled up on the couch and watched the last few episodes of Season Five of The West Wing.

A nice end to a pleasant afternoon and evening.
