8 Jun 2007 - Travelling
This month I have a birthday of some significance. A while ago we were discussing this, and we came to the realisation that we could perhaps afford a special holiday to mark (or perhaps to console me for) the occasion. I remarked somewhat casually to Mr Kimi that two of my favourite places in all the world are Venice and the Dordogne region. He said how about we go there? Of course I said yes.

We were lucky enough to get well-priced air fares through a Royal Thai Airways business class companion fare promotion, so we travelled quite comfortably. The service was excellent, the food good and the seats comfortable.

We arrived at Auckland Airport well in time for our flight. It was an airbus service to Bangkok. We stayed awake most of the way, watching movies and TV shows.

The highlights of what I watched:

“Starter for Ten”. James McAvoy has become one of those actors that make me at least consider watching whatever he’s in. I enjoyed this one. It’s a gentle comedy set in the 80s, a period I remember well. I also remember keenly watching the quiz show “University Challenge”, which features in this movie. I identified quite a bit with McAvoy’s character, a working class kid who goes to university.

“Prime Suspect”, the final episode. Gripping. I’d say I was on the edge of my seat, except that that’s not really possible with the seatbelt on.

We had a two-hour stopover at Bangkok’s shiny new airport, and managed to wander into the one lounge that didn’t yet have ’net connection. Since it was a short time, we didn’t bother changing lounges. I did a bit of writing.

We boarded another plane (a 777 this time) and settled in for another long flight.
