They live on their lives through not enjoying theirs, but rather by trying to make those around them suffer. They talk to you and drain a little bit of you with, not every paragraph, but maybe every third one. If they can make your eyes one-tenth as dead as theirs, even for a minute or two, then they've had a nice snack. The simple way to beat them, of course, is to ignore them or laugh at them, depending on what you can get away with.
