First Potential Issue With Friends Only

In order to successfully authenticate as a friend of a diarist you MUST have cookies enabled for and you MUST make sure that any anti-virus software or personal firewall software does not destroy the contents of that cookie. People using ZoneAlarm should be especially aware of this because ZoneAlarm seems to have something against most cookies that our sites present!

So, if you successfully authenticate for a diarists friend only entries, but then the next screen claims that you’re not logged in again, you’ve got a cookie problem. If you’re running personal firewall software, contact them before you contact me!

Database Schema Change

This entry is mostly a test to make sure I can still post new entries… I’ve updated the database schema to begin changes for the ‘friends only’ entries and work has begun on the code changes necessary for the new feature. I hope that it won’t be too ominous and that it’ll all be done within a few more days :)

Internationalization Support

I have today added more formal support for international people… Most of the world doesn’t speak, or therefore write diaries, in English characters and until now DearDiary.Net has just completely ignored these people’s needs.

I have now added rudimentary support for Internationalisation, by way of setting the content type character set. At the moment there are three options, which are the default of ‘iso-8859-1’ (which is what English diarists use), ‘utf-8’ and ‘big5’.

If you’ve written your diary in Chinese and it suddenly looks all wrong, you will need to login, click Customize and then choose General Diary Options, Basic Settings. On the pop up screen you’ll need to choose ‘big5’ from the drop down list marked ‘Your Character Set’.

At the present moment bizarre things will probably happen if you try to do searching and such like in a non latin character set because the backend database doesn’t properly support utf-8. The next version of MySQL does reportedly support utf-8 and when its finally production quality I will upgrade to it and further improve the support for non-English.

If your diary is written in English (or any Western European language) you can safely ignore this entry!

Reader Comment Fix

The entry text ‘review’ system that was added a couple of weeks ago didn’t show the entry title nor show more than the first entry if there were more entries. This is now fixed.
