I was hoping I wouldn't have to write this entry.
But here I am writing it anyway.
I'm afraid our latest foster dog Snoopy could not manage to turn himself around, even after being given the best that all of us had to offer. Even Fiona pitched in. Everyone sacrificed something. He bit me once, Hub Man at least three times. We kept hoping, okay, this will be his last time... he won't do it again, then WHAM, somebody got nailed.
Sigh.
We cannot adopt out dogs like this. So this weekend he was put down. There are no words for it. Though I am not second guessing all our efforts. We tried everything in our tool box to help him, and he was having none of it.
Sometimes in our rescue group we talk about the 'unspoken contract' that we have with our animals. We pledge to take care of them as best we know how, and they pledge to live in peace with us. Most of the time this arrangement works beautifully. Sometimes not. This was one of the 'not' times.
My only consolation today has been witnessing Ben's obvious relief that Snoopy is not here to make his life miserable. Ben always gave Snoopy what he wanted. He never fought with him.... You never saw a more goofy and playful and joyful Ben than we did yesterday. He bounced around the house like a jack rabbit and played and just had this LOOK on his face...
Ben and Sunny and Fiona are a crack team. We lost this one. But not for lack of trying.
It takes more than a pretty face, a good dog to make....
